Trek Bicycle Corp. recalled about 2,840 units of Trek Super Commuter+ 8S electric bicycles for possible fall hazard, a statement by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission showed.
The company said the front fender bolt can unthread causing the wheel to detach from the bicycle, resulting in a fall hazard to the rider.
The recall involves all model year 2017, 2018, and 2019 Trek Super Commuter+ 8S electric bicycles, which were sold in viper red color with black decals of sizes between 45/S and 60/XL.. The name "Trek" is printed on the bicycle's downtube and the bike has an integrated battery and motor.
The company received two reports of of the wrong bolt being installed to secure the front fender to the fork crown. Only one injury has been reported, but resulted in a vertebrae fracture.
Trek advised consumers to immediately stop using the product and approach the retailer for a free inspection and repair.
The bicycles were made in China and imported to the U.S. by Waterloo, Wisconsin-based Trek Bicycle Corp.
They were sold at independent bicycle stores across the U.S. and online at www.trekbikes.com and other websites from June 2017 through June 2019 for about $5,200.
